After a root canal, taking proper care of your mouth is essential for healing and maintaining long-term oral health. While your dentist will give you detailed post-treatment instructions, it’s important to understand what steps you can take at home to keep your teeth and gums healthy during recovery.

The First 24 Hours: Take It Easy

Immediately after your root canal, your mouth may feel sore or tender. Follow your dentist’s post-operative instructions closely, and rest as much as possible. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the numbness wears off and sensitivity subsides. Stick to soft foods and stay hydrated.

Return to Your Regular Oral Care Routine

Once the initial discomfort improves—usually after the first day—you should return to your normal oral hygiene habits unless instructed otherwise. Continue brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Be gentle around the treated area to prevent irritation.

Floss daily to remove food particles and plaque between teeth. Your dentist may also recommend warm salt water rinses every few hours to reduce bacteria and promote healing. An alcohol-free mouthwash can also be used to keep your mouth fresh and clean.

Prevent Future Dental Problems

Proper care after a root canal not only helps your mouth heal—it also reduces the risk of reinfection or damage to the treated tooth. Avoid hard or sticky foods that can stress the tooth. Attend your follow-up appointments so your dentist can check the tooth’s healing progress and place a crown if needed for protection.

Ask Questions and Stay Informed

Before your root canal appointment, make a list of questions for your dentist. Understanding your aftercare plan helps you feel confident and prepared once you’re home. If you experience unexpected pain, swelling, or sensitivity after several days, contact your dentist promptly.

With the right post-care routine, you can keep your treated tooth strong and healthy for many years to come.
